Lets say, in the area you live. There were a club, strictly social, which got together every three months or so. Maybe for a couple hours. The comment link to all those who attend, is that they love cruises. And at said meeting, a person, from the clubs home office, makes a multi-media presentation, on the industries news, club members recent cruises, etc.
Nobody tries to sign you up for a cruise. The club itself doesn't sell them, though the chapter you belong too is sponsored by a local agency. Your club has its own community site, which would be an upgraded version of what we have here, plus you are member to a much larger community site.
The club would have sub-chapters, focused on young professional, etc. There would be sponsored group cruises during the year. You'd have a commercial grade travel search engine, equal to those you use on other sites, but with no bias in any direction.
Does anything like that sound interesting, would you show, if not always, than a few times a year? Would you rather a travel agent provide that club as a service, rather than a hip-sack, or pre-fab newsletter?
