Royal Caribbean International (RCL) Gets Massive Cash Infusion.

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Royal Caribbean International filed required papers with the SEC to report that Private Capital Management, L.P. (”PCM”) had bought over 8.4 million shares of common stock.  At present prices, that amounts to something akin to $50,000,000 in cash for Royal Caribbean.  This seems to be a major vote of confidence in Royal Caribbean during tough economic times!

Oasis of the Seas Sets Additional Inaugural Sailings! (RCL)

Friday, December 19th, 2008

SeaTrade reported today that Royal Caribbean International (RCL) is adding a pair of sailings to the already announced inaugural schedule.  A four night cruise on the Eastern Caribbean route departing December 1, with a seven day trip starting December 5 will trump the original inaugural set for the 12th.  Passengers who already had booked on that cruise are going to be allowed to rebook for the earlier dates.  Royal Caribbean will add between $200 and $300 per cabin if both earlier cruises are booked back-to-back.

The Garden of Eden on Genesis.

Monday, December 31st, 2007

As the week goes, not much news of note. Fuel continues to effect earnings in the industry. While Royal Caribbean was able to buffer some of the effect, Carnival saw its overall earnings more significantly impacted. Pricing for the Caribbean continues to pick up steam, following a long soft period.

What rates high on my list of interesting observations was related to the Genesis class. I had speculated earlier, on the Royal Caribbean Fan message board, that the rumored featured, said to be “something you wouldn’t expect on a cruise ship,” would prove to be live grass and trees. It seems I was right, if the little birdy from Akers yard is accurate in having seen illustrations of large scale drainage for the “Central Park” section of the ship.

Real grass, trees, all will help add an organic, and less steely feel to the ship. Where the current aesthetic tends to focus on colors, lighting, and appealing lines, this will bring something new to the industry. The only question in my mind, is when or if somebody will ask about airborne bugs and birds migrating between ports, using the newly established green space.

Sovereign of the Seas, Finians Rainbow.

Finian’s Rainbow lounge was where the singles event was suppose to have been. I have yet to receive proof that it ever took place. By the time it was supposed to happen, the Cruise Director had left for the second show, no announcement was made, and the lounge had already been occupied by older couples.

This is also where my life boat muster station was located.

The windows look out over the promenade deck.
